"Citrix Systems is a US-based multinational corporation that was founded in 1989. The company provides server and desktop virtualization, networking, Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) and cloud computing technologies. Based out of Fort Lauderdale in Florida Citrix ventured into the UK in 1997 when it opened its first office in London. In 1998 Citrix opened its second office in the UK in Cambridge.

Market Analysis

Software industry in the UK received a severe jolt during the recession when it swung from growth to an unprecedented decline. Even so the market stood at £8billion and is now returning to a growth path.
Increasing popularity of mobile phones such as Smart Phones, consumerization of technology and the adoption of cloud computing are three global trends that are forcing UK's software companies to rethink their business model, collaborate more closely than before, and focus more sharply on what their consumers want.

The development of cloud computing technology has led to a structural shift that can be compared to the advent of PCs and within the next 10 years SaaS is expected to be the dominant delivery mode for services.

Citrix Systems Operation in the UK

Citrix, a pioneer in virtualization, has been focusing on cloud computing as its new strategy. Transitioning to cloud computing is a natural choice for virtualization giants like Citrix as this will lead to a natural progression turning virtualization into SaaS. Therefore, the company's current focus is on developing an infrastructure that delivers a ?lighter, simpler and more flexible IT'.

The company made a smart move when it acquired XenSource in 2007. Xen is a virtual-machine monitor that originated as a research project at the University of Cambridge. With this acquisition Citrix has added a technology base needed to pull off a cloud based product line, but without undertaking the huge R&D costs and timelines associated with creating their own technology, like its chief competitor VMware did. The combination of XenSource and Citrix brings together application, desktop and server virtualization to deliver more innovation, choice and flexibility to the market. As application delivery becomes a top issue for IT and the world becomes more dynamic, Citrix is making sure that it is providing its customers the most cutting-edge technologies.

Citrix Systems established its business arm Citrix Online's regional office in the UK in 2008. Citrix Online provides remote-connectivity and online collaborations solutions through a host of products like GoToMyPC, GoToTraining, GoToWebinar etc. With its acquisition of Netviewer AG in Germany the company seeks to complement Citrix Online's current consumer base in the UK, Ireland and the Nordics.

With these moves, the company seeks to strengthen its position not just in the UK but across Europe."
