Does Spain still represent a true Nation - State?
The debate on the new statute of autonomy of Catalonia generated a very important debate in Spain.Catalonia is already autonomous in many areas, it has autonomous cultural, linguistics, health and education policies.
This particular case reveals the ambiguous and paradoxical character of the 1978 Spanish Constitution. The Constitution is particularly vague when it comes to the section that contains the principles of Spanish nationalities. This devotes the same space to the unit of the nation and the autonomy of its nationalities.
However, Spain is not strictly speaking the language of a federation of independent States. Nevertheless, in practice, this exacerbated regionalism from the seventeen autonomous communities which constitute Spain and raised the question of the constitution of the State and nation.
