Schooling is an important part of all communities. When in school, children acquire important values and attitudes that are applicable to the rest of their lives. Apart from the curriculum that guides schooling activities, schools are institutions of cultural transmission. However, a variety of factors inhibit the ability of schools to plays their intended functions. For example, in the Minnesota metropolitan area, there is an increase in the incidence of violence in schools.

It is important to understand why violence in schools is a social problem. Psychologists indicate that incidence of violence in the formative years increases the likelihood of violent responses in later life. For example, marital violence and other forms of violence directed at other members of the society are social problems in many societies(Miller, 2008). The role of the educational system is to eliminate the incidence of violence in the children and thus serve the social interests of the society. Incidence of violence in school reduces the ability of the schools to plat this role, hence creating social problems by creating environments that promote violence and failing to create the correct attitudes in students.

[...] An example is suspensions and expulsions. Absence of jurisdiction of the educational system outside the school environment is a major problem according to Mrs. Thomas. She shows that the home environment of the children affect their tendency to display violence. For example, learning how to respond to different situations is part of the social education in schools. Therefore, learning not to respond to provocations is an important part of the educational process(Miller, 2008). However, preexisting factors inhibit the ability of students to control violent urges. [...]
