Since 1970s, some changes have been made in the Swedish and Finnish pornography market. The consumption of pornography has increased in terms of supply, variability, and accessibility. Pornography and pornographic material for a variety of tastes can be obtained in convenience stores, (sex) shops, via mail order, cable TV, videos, and on the Internet. Sexual culture of the Nordic countries is different from the majority of other Western industrialized countries, including the U.S. The social acceptance of adolescent and female sexuality is more significative in the Nordic countries than in most other Western cultures. Another central feature of Nordic sexual culture is fewer restrictions against nudity, but more restrictions warning the touching of the body.

[...] This could be considered to be illegal, because the Finnish Penal Code provides ordinary citizens, and the citizens under the age of 15 years with the right of not being exposed to the pornography against their will. If the sale of porn magazines is decreasing, the porn videos are definitely increasing. As to the Internet, it is difficult to provide any exact numbers because of the extent and changeability of Internet. Most pornographic websites are located abroad. It is estimated that there are about 30 subscription pages presenting some pornography in Finland, the total turnover of amount probably up to several millions of euros. [...]

[...] For instance, the defective registration and recording procedures for pornographic videos, the extensive grey economy of sex shops and the availability of videos on the market of videos which are the opposite of the provisions of the Penal Code, are all the issues that should be studied further on and where supervision requires to be intensified. Besides, I personally believe that a major current problem is related to the Internet: indeed, due to the Internet, pornography is made more anonymous, more accessible and more affordable than ever before, bringing in the new users, increasing the use of the existing fans, and catapulting the others into a sexual compulsivity. It is especially true for Finland, one of the leading countries of the use of Internet. [...]
