Globally, violent crime television programs have increased; this has had a widespread effect on the society, positively and negatively. Negative effects of violent television became a major concern after broadcasting began in the United States in 1946. From previous studies viewing of violent crime television programs have been linked to violent crimes. This research proposal undertakes to study the effect of these violent crime television programs on people's support of gun control legislation.

Gun legislation is a major concern worldwide in the wake of a rise in public shootings. In the United States, California legislators passed bills to help curb gun-related deaths; in 2013 firearms bills supported by the law center were passed by legislature and signed by the governor. Passing of laws and bills on gun legislation is dependent on the peoples support on the same; in this era of the rise in violent crime television programs it is important to study the relationship between the two. However gun control legislation has had challenged support from government and public altogether hence the need to study the contributors of the same, violent crime television being one of them. This research will be beneficial to the government and public in seeking support for passing gun control legislation to help counter firearms violence.
