The Atlantic seaboard of the United States presents itself as a large area that connects the open sea and the North American continent. It opens onto the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico and the presence of many estuaries supports the installation of ports. The Great Lakes belong fully to the Atlantic coast because it is connected to the ocean through the river systems of the Mississippi and St. Lawrence.
