The breakup of the Soviet Union has created 15 new states. The world political map is never final. The thrust of nationalism and border conflicts, for example, could make it evolve.

A state is defined by the existence of a sovereign authority, of a population and territory. States are more or less extensive, more or less populated. The differences are also economic. Finally, cultures and political systems are also highly diverse. Conflicts between states were rare until the early twentieth century, however, internal conflicts and civil wars are increasing.

Alliances -They are strategic and military: NATO. They are economical - EU, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and may also be cultural- the Francophonie, the Organization of Islamic Conference. The United Nations together account for more than 190 countries worldwide.
