This document deals with the situation at the beginning of the reign of Maria Theresa (1740-1760). With 600 000 km ² and 25 million inhabitants, the Habsburg monarchy of Austria is a major European power. It comprised provinces of heritage such as Habsburgs, Austria, Tyrol, Carinthia, Styria and Carniola. They were never unified under a common term, and in 1526 the kingdoms of Bohemia (Bohemia, Moravia, Silesia) and Hungary (with Croatia, and Transylvania the Banat of Temesvár) were added. Largely occupied by the Turks for a century and a half, it was reconquered by Hungary between 1683 and 1718 by troops of the Emperor. There was a continental block despite the opening of the maritime Fiume and Trieste. It was irrigated from west to east by the Danube, and we must mention about the formerly Spanish Netherlands and the Duchy of Milan.
