The events that took plare in Germany during the twentieth century have led German historians to continually review and interpret a new history. Perhaps more than the history of France or any other country in Europe, German history has been subject to drastic reinterpretation not only of the tragic events of the twentieth century but also that of prior periods which gave rise to these events. These interpretations of the past of Germany aim to register themselves in particular contexts. In the historiography of Germany, the various debates that have animated, and even torn German society since the First World War, center around the meaning and scope of the traumatic events of its past. We consider the impact of successive defeats of 1918 and 1945, the revelation of the Holocaust, the Cold War, from 1968 and finally the reunification on German historiography, seeking to show the ruptures and continuities in the portrayal of German historians until now.
