Germany was not in existence in the middle of the nineteenth century. It was a patchwork of German states that met in the Germanic Confederation, which combined two major states: Prussia and Austria. In 1871, the German Empire was established around Prussia. Otto von Bismarck was still regarded as one of the most important figures, not just of Germany but also of Europe in the second half of the nineteenth century, not only because of his role in the construction of the Empire German (the Second Reich) and German unity, but also by his authoritarian character of "Iron Man". What role did Bismarck in the birth and consolidation of the Second Empire in Germany?
