These were the words of George Bush to describe the Gulf War - "A war of good against evil, justice against injustice, human dignity and freedom against tyranny and oppression." He gave this speech at the Union early in 1991. In this first major conflict after the Cold War, he saw the symbol of the new world order that was built by the United States. The Gulf War was really a new kind of conflict and explained the traditional distribution of powers.

The first Gulf war took place by a UN approved coalition after Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait.
The reasons for Saddam's invasion of Kuwait are varied. One of the reasons was that the Iraqi government was heavily in debt after their costly conflict with Iran. Saddam Hussein wanted to sell the oil at the highest prices but his ideas conflicted with the other OPEC members, particularly Kuwait which did not want a repeat of the oil shocks.

Iraq has always considered Kuwait to be an amputated part of its territory. In addition, the Iraqi port of Basra was exposed and could easily be attacked by Iran.
