Castro was the son of a sugarcane planter who had emigrated from Galicia. Fidel Castro was born on August 13, 1926 near Biran, in the Oriente province. He attended a primary school with the Jesuits in Santiago in Cuba.
In 1942, he entered the college of Belen in Havana. This was a middle school that was run by the Jesuit Preparatory. He then continued his studies in law at the University of Havana where he quickly became president of the federation of students.
