There was a strong wave of colonial expansion between 1880 and 1914. This wave was driven by economic (for resources and markets), political (international rivalries) and strategic reasons. The rise of European imperialism was swift. The European powers extended their colonies in Asia, Africa and Oceania. They established rules between the colonized countries (Berlin Conference, 1884-1885).
