NGOs played a key role during the great famines in Ethiopia in the 1980s. This study will present the conflicting situation in Ethiopia at the time of famine and the way in which NGOs stepped to alleviate the dire situation.

In the 1980s, Ethiopia was subjected to two different famines ? one in the South and the other in the North. It is the latter which was most fatal, with the number of victims running into thousands. The starvation deaths caught the notice of NGOs worldwide and resulted in a deluge of support. Concerned individuals and groups across the world collaborated to raise awareness on this issue.
