Local failure? has been defined as primary tumor growth any time following the last day of radiotherapy (RT) within or adjacent to the RT portal (but not in regional nodes) as assessed by physical examination and imaging (Wharam et al., 1997). The Intergroup Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) Studies II, III, and IV documented local failure rates of 22%, 19%, and 13%, respectively (Wharam et al., 2004), while Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) in 2005 reported a 3-year actuarial local failure rate of 5% (Wolden et al., 2005).

Preventing local recurrence is critical in soft-tissue sarcoma treatment since death follows shortly thereafter (Lin et al., 2006, Johnson et al., 2003). Any modality that could help achieve local control by the detection or prediction of local recurrence would be invaluable to the overall management of RMS.

[...] Sequential PET and local failure in patients being treated for Rhabdomyosarcoma ABSTRACT Purpose Some patients with rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) fail locally despite receiving all planned therapy. We assessed whether PET scans performed before, during, and after treatment could predict local failure. Patients and Methods In this retrospective study, 102 charts from 12/00 to 1/09 of patients with RMS (females, n= 53; males, n=49; age range, 0.40 to 42.56 years) were examined for local recurrence. SUVmax for PET scans was recorded (Initial/Baseline PET, Pre-Radiotherapy PET, Post-Radiotherapy PET) and analyzed to determine a correlation between SUVmax and local failure. [...]
