Now the capital of Indian state Andhra Pradesh, this city was founded in 1592. This city was discovered by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah, a ruler of the Qutb Shahi dynasty on the banks of the Musi River in 1591. It was this ruler who ordered the construction of Charminar one of the famous monuments of the city and the country in whole.

The Mughal emperor Aurangzeb invaded this city in 1687. Mughal rule did not last for long, instead appointed autonomous Governors to the country. Asaf Jah I, was granted the title Nizam-ul-Mulk meaning "Governor of the country". This was the beginning of Asaf Jahi dynasty. It lasted till one year before India got its independence from the British. The city grew both economically and culturally under the Nizam Dynasty (seven Nizams). Hyderabad became the formal capital of Golconda. Huge reservoirs like Nizam Sagar, Tungabhadra, Osman Sagar, Himayat Sagar, and others were built.
