Poster, bullying, wording, awareness, emotions, victim, layout, prejudiced beliefs, cycles of harm, cyberbullies
I chose to create this poster to raise awareness around about all the bullying taking place in our schools. When I first opted for this type of art, I thought about the idea that bullying isn't just one thing, it is a mix of emotions and insults, and this is what I wanted to show in my work.
[...] Each element was chosen to represent an aspect of the theme and the addition of them all creates a bigger picture that tells us how overwhelming and oppressing it is to be a victim of bullying. I hope that by choosing the photo of a crying teenage girl in the middle It can appeal to the compassion of my fellow classmates and encourage them to never say those kinds of words to anyone. This poster is hopeful in some ways and darker in other, it is this double message that I found interesting in making it, it can encourage victims and discourage bullies. [...]
[...] I saw the red color as the color of a stop sign, but now it also feels relevant as the color of blood. It reminds us that she can self harm because of those comments, but it can also represent the bloody hands of those typing those comments, and how they are not innocent, they are criminals. I wished for this poster to represent all the sides of cyberbullying and the whirlwind that it is, this is why I chose to do a collage poster. [...]
[...] Those words mean something, and they hurt. This is why I decided to put in the middle the picture of a crying girl. As those words are seen on a keyboard, we are meant to understand that this is cyberbullying, and the girl is alone on the other side of the screen. I chose this picture because the girl is young, as are most victims of bullying, and she is resigned to her fate for now, she cries (as can be seen because of her ruined make-up), and she seems powerless. The poster is separated in three parts: one with insults on a keyboard and hands tearing it apart, one with a girl crying and hands pointed at her, and the last one with the same elements as the first part. Words possess the potential to either dismantle or perpetuate harmful cycles, making it imperative for individuals, communities, and institutions to recognize the impact of language in shaping the experiences of those affected by bullying. By fostering a culture of respect and empathy, we can harness the power of words to build a society in which kindness prevails over cruelty, and where every individual is afforded the dignity and compassion they deserve.
