Lyon Terminal is a public limited company and specializes in port handling and heavy lifts, which was created in 1993 and located at the port of Lyon, Edouard Herriot. It is a subsidiary of Compagnie Nationale du Rhône (CNR) who owns 64.08% of the share capital. And it is also owned by the other three companies share capital is depicted.
As the most important entrance of Southern Europe, the river Rhône and Lyon Terminal have highlighted their significant positions. In 2006, Lyon Terminal handled about 204,000 containers (TEU) and 1,350,000 tones of cargo of all modes of transport. Its objective was to reach 300,000 containers in 2007.
Terminal n°1 was the first site operated by Managing an integrated Supply Chain y Lyon Terminal since 1993. And in 2005 CNR began to build a second terminal to satisfy the increasing request for services of handling. Now, after the implementation of the Terminal n°2, its activity will specialize in railroads, heavy parcels and general cargo.
[...] A very important point to remark is that 90% of the total of the containers that get to Lyon terminal come from Asia. This fact highlights the globalization of the supply chain in today's firms around the world. We also learned that Lyon is the main exporter of France and this is due to all of the important industries that are established within the region, like, Textiles, Toys and also big firms such as Evian, Michelin and Renault. Last but not least since it is one of the most surprising facts mentioned during the visits is that many boats prefer to go all the way to Antwerp in Belgium instead of unloading here in France, (even if they have to pass by France first) because of the consistent strike problems in Marseilles. [...] Always thanks to the intern software, Lyon Terminal has in real time, an optimal view of the storage area. Only the person in charge of customs knows what it is inside and the others, through a specific color code, know when containers will leave the site. Containers are moved from a place to another with special reach trucks meant for this type of task. When it comes to re-expediting containers by trucks, the procedure is framed: the truck is controlled at the entrance of the site thanks to registration number. [...]
[...] Your personal reflections on what you saw After visiting Lyon Terminal, we were impressed by the integrated supply chain and the logistic management. “Logistics is the art of managing the supply chain and science of managing and controlling the flow of goods, materials, information and other resources like products, services and people from the source of production to the marketplace”(Source: Wikipedia, the concept of logistic, abstractive). And this visit gives us the opportunity to compare our knowledge in Integrated Supply Chain Management with reality. [...]
