UPS - Trends - Workforce
In a globe that is constantly shifting towards digitalization and automation of delivery of goods and services, the value of delivery services cannot be overstated. It represents the future of the retail industry. The current social, demographic, workforce and economic trends show that there is a projected increase in the volume of delivery in the foreseeable future.
After the recession, there is an increased emphasis on the role of spending in speeding the rate of recovery. The rationale behind this is that in spending, there is increased cash flow and thus creating an opportunity for other people to earn an income. The result is that the economy is significantly boosted (Schaffner et al., 2003). There is in addition a considerable increase in the amount of online shopping. A significant number of people do their shopping on the internet and thus increase the opportunity for deliveries because internet transactions are virtual and physical delivery takes place later.
More people are attracted to the concept of online shopping (Schaffner et al., 2003). Modern trends attract more people by high merit of peer pressure and demanding to keep up with the current trends. In addition, the presence of social media has significantly increased the amount of marketing and thus increases the volume of online shoppers. In addition, the increased emphasis on convenience has seen more people opt for delivery, as opposed to picking the commodities themselves. In addition, there is reduced diversity in the social set ups due to the influence of westernization.
[...] All these are rationalized to make the best decision. For example, the reduction of the health benefits was a means to reduce the expenditure. [...] However, the united parcel service (UPS) has reduced the health benefits for her employees. A new corporate policy seeks to remove the spouses of workers from their health benefit plans if the said spouses are eligible for the same benefits elsewhere (Greenhouse, 2013). The endeavor of this strategy is to lessen the expenditure by a projected 60 million dollars (The Associated Press, 2012). The company then shares this saving with the workers. In addition, the company hires about casual laborers in the festive season. [...]
[...] In addition, there is reduced diversity in the social set ups due to the influence of westernization. Demographic trends Traditionally, the older generations have been reluctant to accept the developments in the IT sector. This implies that they have also been skeptical of the concepts of online shopping. Therefore, they have started the delivery business for many years. However, with time and maturity of the younger generations, virtual shopping is acceptable and thus creating room for growth. For example, there was a ten percent increase in the packaging delivered in the festive season last year (2013). [...]
[...] Due to its broad client base and workforce, UPS has to do diversity management. This is done through hiring locals to deal with local businesses in order to conduct business within the cultural constraints. The top-down leadership model is applied in UPS. The senior most persons make the rules and policies and the junior employees have to follow them (Schaffner et al., 2003).
