The book It's Even Worse than It Looks: How the American Constitutional System Collided with the New Politics of Extremism by Norman J. and Thomas E. Mann Ornstein analyses American politics. The books says that today's US congress has come to a congestion state caused by the two political parties in America moving to solidly right wing and left wing sides abandoning the center as well as becoming passionately argumentative.

They come up with an ideological polarization graph that has been derived from political scientists Howard Rosenthal and Keith Poole's analysis, which allegedly does demonstrate that republicans a made a wider move from the middle compared to the democrats.
