Argentina has established since 1993 a gender quota ?applying to all political parties for the election of national legislators?(Jones, 2005:645): 30% of candidates must be women on party lists and a similar proportion must ?be placed in ?electable' positions?. Consequently, women's presence in the Chamber of Deputies and Senate increases dramatically: they now account respectively for 34% and 44% of the seats whereas 5% of the places were occupied by women before the introduction of quotas.
