Local failure has been defined as primary tumor growth any time following the last day of radiotherapy (RT) within or adjacent to the RT portal (but not in regional nodes) as assessed by physical examination and imaging (Wharam et al., 1997). The Intergroup Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) Studies II, III, and IV documented local failure rates of 22%, 19%, and 13%, respectively (Wharam et al., 2004), while Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) in 2005 reported a 3-year actuarial local failure rate of 5% (Wolden et al., 2005).
Preventing local recurrence is critical in soft-tissue sarcoma treatment since death follows shortly thereafter (Lin et al., 2006, Johnson et al., 2003). Any modality that could help achieve local control by the detection or prediction of local recurrence would be invaluable to the overall management of RMS.
