Le Furet Du Nord is a famous shop which sells books, CDs, and DVDs. It is located in Northern France. The main store was set up in 1959 in downtown Lille. Today, people say that Le Furet Du Nord is one of the biggest European bookshops (the main shop is 7000 square meters large on 8 levels). The name Furet du Nord clings to the past, indeed its first store was settled by Georges Poulard in an ancient fur shop in 1936: it was the starting point of a great adventure! Moreover it refers to a local tradition that consists of hunting with ferrets. Le Furet Du Nord was at first, a little bookshop located in rue de la Vieille Comédie. In 1947, the owner engaged Paul Callens as his main salesperson.
In 1950, Georges Poulard sold Le Furet to Paul Callens, who established the shop on the grand place in Lille in 1959 on the premises of the ancient Galeries Barbès. At this time, Le Furet Du Nord was an innovative concept, the first self-service bookshop!

Accompanying this big enlargement, Hachette will also buy the “Virgin Megastore” chain. In 2005, the 12th opened in Roubaix. It offers an amazing variety of books, stationery, CD's and DVD's in an area of 1200 square meters.
