The aim of this review is to provide a structured overview of previous research, identify gaps in the current literature, and formulate informed policy recommendations for managers and decision-makers. This analysis aims to enlighten strategies and policies to facilitate the integration of the circular economy in the cosmetic industry, while highlighting the associated benefits and challenges.
[...] Structured Overview by Theme Principles and Limitations of the Circular Economy: The circular economy concept, as explained by Korhonen et al., is based on redefining production and consumption processes to create a sustainable and efficient system. This model focuses on the reuse, recycling, and regeneration of products and materials, forming continuous cycles that significantly reduce waste. The goal is to achieve optimal resource use, extending product lifespans and minimizing environmental impact. This approach is especially pertinent in the cosmetic industry, where product life cycles are often short and the ecological footprint from production and packaging is substantial. However, adopting circular economy principles in sectors like cosmetics involves challenges. Korhonen et al. [...]
[...] discuss the importance of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in the transition to a circular economy, arguing that CSR initiatives, particularly those focused on environmental sustainability, can powerfully drive the integration of circular practices in the cosmetic industry. For example, adopting CSR strategies that emphasize waste reduction, the use of sustainable materials, and production transparency can enhance brand image and spur innovation and efficiency in operational processes. Technological Innovations and Their Impact on the Circular Economy: Sterev explores how Industry 5.0, characterized by increased integration of digital technologies, can facilitate the transition to a circular economy in the cosmetic industry. [...] Waste Valorization and Alternative Sources: Waste valorization and the exploration of alternative sources are crucial aspects of the circular economy in the cosmetic industry. This approach aims not only to reduce waste but also to find innovative methods to turn waste into valuable resources. Del Rio Osorio et al.'s study specifically focuses on this theme, examining how the cosmetic industry can leverage agricultural waste and other by-products to create new products. They highlight the potential of agri-food waste as a source of raw materials for cosmetics, demonstrating how by-products often considered as waste, such as fruit peels, coffee grounds, or cereal residues, can be transformed into active ingredients for beauty products.
